Bonny Doon

Contra unites the earthy rusticity of old-vine carignane - that hard, stoniness that if untempered may be a tad too austere for some - with the luscious, opulent fruitiness of a number of the softer blending grapes. In the wine, you've got rocks and raspberries (or maybe they're mulberries or blackberries), a lively acidity, tannins that are firm but perfectly ripe, and the result is an amazing experience that is both intellectual and sensual. It is hard to really articulate why this experience is so special, but the yin and yang of soft and hard, of fruit and earth, creates the most electrifying aesthetic frisson.

Wine Advocate

A stunning wine, the 2009 Contra (I believe 2009 is the debut vintage of this cuvee) is a 6,100 case Central Coast Cotes du Rhone-like blend of 55.1% Carignan, 15.4% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Its dark ruby hue is accompanied by notes of tree bark, freshly sauteed porcini mushrooms, jus de viande, red currants, kirsch and spice box. With loads of fruit, medium body, wonderful ripeness and purity, and abundant character, this delicious wine can be enjoyed over the next 1-2 years. Obviously, it is a phenomenal value.

Score: 88. —Robert Parker, August 2011.

Wine Enthusiast

Here's a tasty young wine, jammy and rich in fresh blackberries and cherries. With zingy acidity, it's a nice little wine to drink now. Seems to be mainly Carignan.

Score: 86. —Steve Heimoff, December 01, 2010.
