Guido Porro

Maceration in cement vats 20-25 days; pumping over 3-4 times daily. Three years in 15- to 25-hl Slavonian oak botti. The limestone-heavy soils of Serralunga d'Alba are known for providing the most long-lived and full-bodied Barolos. Porro's vineyards are located here in the Lazzarito cru, a gorgeous amphitheatre that faces south-southwest and offers the grapes full sun exposure and protection from the wind. The sub-zones of Lazzairasco and Santa Caterina are both monopoli and share the same soil and similar exposition and altitude, although the very old vines in the former give a more powerful, masculine wine, while the latter brings out the delicacy and elegance of Nebbiolo.

Wine Advocate

Porro’s 2006 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco possesses a touch more density and structure than the S. Caterina. Freshly cut flowers, tar and new leather develop in the glass, adding layers of complexity to the beautifully articulated fruit. The Lazzairasco is a serious Barolo that needs time but it is shaping up as one of the hidden gems of the vintage. It is a fabulous effort from Porro. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

Score: 92+. —Antonio Galloni, December 2010.

Wine Enthusiast

Compared to the estate's S. Caterina expression of Barolo, the Lazzairasco cru delivers higher intensity in terms of its spice and vanilla tones. The wine is young, well structured, lively and fresh with a very elegant mouthfeel.

Score: 92. —Monica Larner, December 01, 2010.
